UNIT 1
- Understand the main characteristics of the ancien régime (old regime) and what society was like for the people living under absolute rulers
- How did the Enlightenment challenge the ancien régime and what were the main principles?
- How were ideas from the Enlightenment spread?
- Be able to explain the shift from absolutism to enlightened despotism
- Understand the shift from before to after the 18th century regarding internal and external commerce including the principles of mercantilism
- What were the causes and consequences of the Spanish War of Succession (1700-1713)?
UNIT 2
- What were the causes of the American Revolution and how were the decisions made reflect ideas of the Enlightenment?
- Be able to explain the causes and consequences of the French Revolution as well as demonstrate an understanding of the chronology of the revolution.
- Be able to compare and contrast both the American and French Revolutions (similarities and differences)
- Understand how Napoleon changed Europe included the influence of French occupation throughout parts of Europe (restoration and liberal revolutions).
- What was the process of unification for both Italy and Germany? Are there any similarities between them?
