FILMS, SERIES, BOOKS AND OTHER ENTERTAINMENTS

Here you will find a selection of films, series, books and some other type of materials that we think you and your familes could find interesting. We present them to you and then you can look for them at home and also  in bookshops or libreries.

We will follow the order of the units, but we will be uploading only when we find something interesting or attractive.


SEVEN YEAR´S WAR or FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (1754-1763)

The Last of the Mohicans
It is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper (1826). The story is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War (the Seven Years´ War), when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, the French depended on its Native American allies to help fight the more numerous British colonists in the Northeast frontier areas.

 It has been adapted numerous times for films, TV movies and cartoons and one of the most popular and successful adaptations was the film from 1992, directed by Michael Mann and with Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe as main characters.

AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE (1776-1881)

The Patriot 
It is a 2000 American historical war film directed by Roland Emmerich,  and starring Mel Gibson, Chris Cooper and Heath Ledger. 

The film takes place in rural York County, South Carolina, and depicts the story of an American swept into the American Revolutionary War when his family is threatened. 

The film has been controversial for its historical approach and interpretation but most people consider it quite entertaining.

The Mission 

It is a 1986 British drama film about the experiences of a Jesui missionary in 18th century South America. The film was written by Robert Bolt and directed by Roland Joffé and the main characters Robert de Niro and Jeremy Irons.

The film is set in the 1750s and involves Spanish Jesuit priest Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) who enters the South American jungle to build a mission and convert a Guaraní community to Christianity.

The Mission soundtrack was written by Ennio Morricone and it is amazing.

 CATHERINE THE GREAT

Catherine the Great is a 1995 television movie based on the life of  Catherine II of Russia. It stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Catherine, Jeanne Moureau as Empress Elizabeth and Omar Sharif as Alexis Razumovsky.

This is another film about Catherine the great that reconstructs the life and times of this Empress. It is directed by Paul Burgess and John-Paul Davidson and with Emily Bruni, Diana Dumbrava and Dan Chiriac as main stars.


THE FRENCH REVOLUTION (1789)

Les Misérables 

It is a 2012 British romantic drama film. The film is based on the musical of the same name by Alain Boublil-Michel Schönberg which is in turn based on the 1862 French novel Victor Hugo. 

The film is directed by Tom Hooper,  and the casting is led by Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Anna Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.


Amazing music and interesting interpretation of the liberal revolution of 1830.

SHARPE

Sharpe
 is a series of historical fiction stories by  Bernard Cornwell. It is based on the character of Richard Sharpe. Cornwell's series tells about Sharpe's adventures in the British Army during the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1812).

He begins in Sharpe's Tiger as a private in the 33red Regiment of foot, who becomes a Sergeant by the end of the book. And he is gradually promoted through the ranks, finally becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in Sharpe's Waterloo.

The stories formed the basis for an ITV television series in which the eponymous character was played by Sean Bean, also known as Boromir in The Lord of the Rings film Trilogy and Lord Eddard Stark in the HBO television series the HBO television series Game of Thrones. 


WORLD WAR I

Lawrence of Arabia is a 1962 British epic adventure drama film based on the life of T.E. Lawrence. It is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema. The film depicts Lawrence's experiences in the Arabian Peninsula during WWI, in particular his attacks on Aqaba and Damascus and his involvement in the Arab Natioanl Counicl. Its themes include Lawrence's emotional struggles with the personal violence inherent in war, his own identity, and his divided allegiance between his native Britain and its army and his newfound comrades within the Arabian desert tribes.

Gallipoli is a 1981 Australian film directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee, about several young men from rural Western Australia who enlist in the Australian Army during WWI. They are sent to the peninsula of Gallipoli in the Ottoman Empire (in modern-day Turkey), where they take part in the Gallipoli Campaign. During the course of the movie, the young men slowly lose their innocence about the purpose of war.

  • WAR HORSE (2011) - To his wife's dismay farmer Narracott buys a thoroughbred horse rather than a plough animal, but when his teenaged son Albert trains the horse and calls him Joey, the two becoming inseparable. When his harvest fails, the farmer has to sell Joey to the British cavalry and he is shipped to France where, after a disastrous offensive he is captured by the Germans and changes hands twice more before he is found, caught in the barbed wire in No Man's Land four years later and freed. He is returned behind British lines where Albert, now a private, has been temporarily blinded by gas, but still recognizes his beloved Joey. However, as the Armistice is declared Joey is set to be auctioned off. After all they have been through will Albert and Joey return home together?

THE RED BARON is a 2008 German biopic directed by Nikolai Müllerschön about the World War I fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen, known as the "Red Baron". Baron Manfred von Richthofen is the most feared and celebrated pilot of the German air force in World War I. To him and his companions, air combats are events of sporty nature, technical challenge and honorable acting, ignoring the terrible extent of war. But after falling in love with the nurse Käte, Manfred realizes he is only used for propaganda means. Caught between his disgust for the war, and the responsibility for his fighter wing, von Richthofen sets out to fly again.


WORLD WAR II

ENEMY AT THE GATES (2001) In World War II, the fall of Stalingrad will mean the collapse of the whole country. The Germans and Russians are fighting over every block, leaving only ruins behind. The Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev stalks the Germans, taking them out one by one, thus hurting the morale of the German troops. The political officer Danilov leads him on, publishing his efforts to give his countrymen some hope. But Vassili eventually start to feel that he can not live up to the expectations on him. He and Danilov fall in love with the same girl, Tanya, a female soldier. From Germany comes the master sniper König to put an end to the extraordinary skilled Russian sniper.

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war film set during the invasion of Normandy in World War II. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Robert Rodat. After the invasion of fortress Europe on June 6th 1944, Tom Hanks leads his squad from the 2nd Ranger Battalion of the 29th Infantry Division, on a mission to find and bring home Private James Francis Ryan after the death of his brothers. The mission takes them through Nazi occupied territory to establish contact with Ryan's unit an element of the 101st Airborne Division. This exiting war thriller brings the reality of history's bloodiest war into the homes of ordinary people, but also brings into light the reality of broken and lost families in a time of total and encompassing war.

Schindler's List is a 1993 American epic historical drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg and scripted by Steven Zaillian. It is based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, an Australian novelist. The film is based on the life of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. The true story of Czech born Oskar Schindler, a businessman who tried to make his fortune during the Second World War by exploiting cheap Jewish labour, but ended up penniless having saved over 1000 Polish Jews from almost certain death during the holocaust.
